system 7 is a uk-based techno and ambient project formed in 1990 by steve hillage and miquette giraudy, both of whom had previously been central members of a pioneering psychedelic space rock collective in the 1970s. rather than operating as a closed duo, the project has incorporated a broad range of collaborators over the years, including derrick may, alex paterson of the orb, carl craig, and laurent garnier. system 7 are notable among ambient and techno acts for integrating live guitar into their work, drawing on hillage's background as a rock guitarist. for a period the group operated under an alternative name to avoid conflicts with apple's computer operating system of the same designation.
