distinct motive

distinct motive is the production duo of josh bates and phil shore, formed in 2013, with bates based in detroit and shore from niagara falls and toronto. the pair work in dark, minimal bass music that pays reference to the early aesthetic of dubstep and its dub-influenced roots. among their releases is "krome", put out via the vinyl-only imprint bananastandsound in 2015, and "40hz", a track named after the toronto-based 40hz soundsystem, released in 2016 through truth's deep dark and dangerous label. their work has received support from artists including noisia and distance.
