derrick carter is a dj, producer, and remixer born october 21, 1969 in chicago, illinois, recognized as an influential figure in the development of chicago house music. he began djing in his teens and worked at gramophone records, becoming active in the local house scene by the late 1980s. carter has released music on cajual records and other imprints, often under aliases including sound patrol and red nail. in 1995 he co-founded classic music company with luke solomon, a label noted for its eclectic approach to house music, which was sold to defected records in 2010. he also operated the labels blue cucaracha in the 1990s and persnickety sounds in the 2010s.
