afrikaburn

afrikaburn is a week-long participatory arts gathering held annually in the tankwa karoo desert, a remote semi-arid landscape requiring a multi-hour drive from cape town. modelled on the ten principles of the broader burning man regional network, it operates as a temporary city built entirely by its participants, with no commercial vendors and no spectators.

electronic music runs across multiple camps and structures throughout the event, spanning techno, progressive, psychedelic, and downtempo styles depending on the year's participant-built stages. alongside the music, the gathering centres on large-scale art installations, mutant vehicles, fire performance, and theme camps offering workshops, communal meals, and other programming.
